Estas son algunas de las frases de la película El club de la lucha (1999, David Fincher), adaptación de la novela escrita por Chuck Palahniuk, que lo llevó a la fama. 

Chuck estudió periodismo y a su edad adulta se convirtió en miembro de la Sociedad Cacofónica- la palabra cacofonía consiste en la repetición de palabras que resultan  sonoramente desagradables. 

Esta sociedad se define como: una red de espíritus libres unidos en la búsqueda de experiencias al margen de la sociedad establecida. Algunos acontecimientos de cacofonía implican trajes y travesuras en sitios públicos y la entrada a sitios prohibidos.

El credo de esta sociedad es : ¡Usted ya es un miembro!

En esta sociedad  Palahniuk consiguió inspiración para muchas de sus novelas y la base para el proyecto Mayhem del El Club de la lucha, que fue su segundo intento de publicación (y su puente al éxito), ya que su primera novela -Monstruos Invisibles- fue rechazada en un primer momento por ser demasiado perturbadora. 

                   En El club de la lucha la trama gira en torno a un joven sin nombre (Edward Norton) confundido, cansado de la cultura consumista en la que su generación se ha sumido y que desea hacer algo para poder cambiarlo. Tras conocer a Tyler Durden (Brad Pitt) -nihilista que rechaza la cultura del consumo y cree que la autodestrucción es lo único que hace que la vida valga la pena- crean ambos un club secreto de lucha (cuyas 2 primeras reglas son: NADIE habla sobre el club de la lucha) donde descargar las frustraciones y la ira. Este club tendrá un gran éxito. 

Película muy recomedable.

Un apunte: los grupos de apoyo a los que el narrador asiste están basados en los grupos de apoyo a los que Palahniuk llevaba enfermos terminales como parte de un trabajo voluntario.

           Y por último, Edward Norton, actor, guionista, productor y director de cine de EEUU. Bajo mi punto de vista es uno de los mejores actores,  artista polifacético, y como ejemplo, en papeles serios como en American History X (1998, Tony Kaye)- donde se ganó una nominación al Oscar como mejor actor- o en menos serios en Smoochy (2002, Danny DeVito).            

Edward Norton, licenciado en Historia, debutó en el cine junto a Richard Gere en la película Las dos caras de la verdad (1996, Gregory Hoblit) donde interpreta a un joven acusado de asesinato. En esta película Norton ganó un Globo de Oro al mejor actor de reparto.

``PAPAVER SOMNIFERUM´´ (ENGLISH VERSION)

       It is the scientific name of the poppy, also known as white poppy or `opium plant´- (remember that opium is used for relieving pain, as medicine for cough and to treat the diarrhea).

It is an ancient medicinal plant which milky sap contains a lot of alkaloids, and the important ones are morphine, codeine and papaverine.

From the morphine we can obtain the heroin, a very addictive drug which is mostly abused in the film Trainspotting (1996, Danny Boyle).

As a matter of interest, the heroin was produced by the pharmaceutical company, Bayer, in 1898, as the remedy for morphine addiction. The result : heroin was more addictive than morphine. Finally, a better alternative was found to heroin addiction, methadone.

To summarize the movie, I will define it as: a film in defence of life- choose it- although from the pharmacological view is in defence of drugs.

The film is based on the novel written by Irvine Welsh in 1993, which title refers to a hobby that consists of observing the moving trains and write their number and features for comparing later with another people .

The Trainspotting is also referred to a way to inject the heroin, directly through the vein.

Trainspotting talks about the story of a group of young heroin addicts from Edinburgh, without ambitions in life. I think it´s one of the films that deal with drugs in a realistic way, from being hook on drugs, unreality sensation they make (in my opinion, in the film they achieve that feeling when Renton falls in the red carpet), tolerance (the need for higher doses to achieve the same effects), withdrawal symptoms, and more symptoms, the coming off, the relapse and the detoxification.

Note: the Sick Boy character is obsessed by Sean Connery and his James Bond character. Curiously the actor who plays Sick Boy, Jonny Lee Miller, is Bernard Lee grandchildren, who played M in James Bond films until 1979.

Nowadays Jonny Lee Miller plays detective Sherlock Holmes with Lucy Liu (detective Watson) in Elementary serie, that will release the second season soon; very recommendable.

Trainspotting is one of the best films in ninety decade, when a`skinny  heroin addict´ appearance was also in fashion and promoted in glamour magazines and fashion clubs like something chic.

Another note: Davidé Sorrenti was one of the fashion photographers in charge of promote this appearance (e.g. left picture), who curiously died at the age of 20 as a result of heroin overdose.

In 2016 the second part will be released, Porno, the novel adaptation written by Irvine Welsh and the sequel to Trainspotting. It will also be directed by Danny Boyle and the story talks about the evolution (or not) of the characters.

``PAPAVER SOMNIFERUM´´

                 

               Es el nombre científico de la Adormidera, también conocida como amapola blanca o ``planta del opio´´- (recordad que el opio se utiliza para aliviar el dolor, como medicamento para la tos y para tratar la diarrea).

Es una antigua planta medicinal cuya savia lechosa contiene muchos alcaloides, de los cuales los más importantes son la morfina, la codeína y la papaverina. 

A partir de la morfina obtenemos la heroína, una droga muy adictiva y de principal abuso en la película Trainspotting (1996, Danny Boyle).  

Como curiosidad, la heroína fue elaborada por la compañía farmacéutica Bayer en 1898, entre otras cosas, como remedio para la adicción a la morfina. El resultado fue que la heroína provocaba más adicción que la morfina. Finalmente se encontró un remedio mejor para la adicción a la heroína, la metadona.

Definiría la película (grosso modo) como una apología a la vida- (elígela) - aunque bajo el punto de vista farmacológico sea a las drogas.

La película está basada en la novela escrita por Irvine Welsh en 1993 ,cuyo título hace referencia a un hobby que consiste en observar el paso de los trenes y anotar su número y características para luego darse importancia entre los otros aficionados.

El trainspotting es también una forma de inyectarse la heroína, directa en vena.

Trainspotting narra la historia de un grupo de jóvenes heroinómanos de Edimburgo, sin aspiraciones en la vida. Creo que es una de las pocas películas que tratan el tema de las drogas de manera muy realista, desde el enganche, sensación de irrealidad que producen (creo que muy logrado con el efecto de la alfombra donde Renton cae) , tolerancia (necesidad de dosis más altas para producir los mismo efectos), síndrome de abstinencia y todos sus síntomas, intento de desenganche, la recaída y por último la desintoxicación.

Un apunte: el personaje de Sick Boy está obsesionado con Sean Connery y su personaje de James Bond. Curiosamente el actor que lo interpreta, Jonny Lee Miller, es nieto de Bernard Lee, quien hacía el papel de M en las películas de James Bond hasta 1979. 

Actualmente Jonny Lee Miller interpreta al detective Sherlock Holmes junto con Lucy Liu (detective Watson) en la serie Elementary, que próximamente estrenará 2º temporada; muy recomendable.

Trainspotting es una de las películas que ha marcado la década de los 90, coincidiendo además cuando se puso de moda un ``look de un adicto a la heroína´´, promocionado en revistas famosas y en círculos de la moda como algo chic. 

Otro apunte: Davidé Sorrenti fue unos de los fotógrafos de moda encargado de promocionar este look (ej.  foto de la izq ), que curiosamente murió a los 20 años por una sobredosis de heroína.

En 2016 se estrenará la segunda parte , Porno, adaptación de la novela de Irvine Welsh y tardía continuación de Trainspotting. También será dirigida por Danny Boyle y la historia se centrará en como ha cambiado (o no) la vida de los personajes. 

한국 영화 (ENGLISH VERSION)

                       Today it´s time to talk about a big famous South Korean film director, Chan-Wook Park, who studied Philosophy at the university and (the story goes that) after watching the film: Vertigo (1958, Alfred Hitchcock) managed to be interested in cinema.

He was catapulted to fame after directing a box-office success of Korea´s history in 2001- Joint Security Area (Gongdong gyeongbi gu-yeok. 2000). This film is about the research done when two North-Korean soldiers are found dead in the Joint Security Area, which is between both Koreas (North and South), and because of that both Koreas blame each other for the crime.

As a matter of interest, in the 2007 political summit between both countries, the South Korean President, Roh Moo-Hyun, gave this DVD film as a present, to North Korean President, Kim Jong-il.

After the success of this film, Park started the Revenge Trilogy:

1- Sympathy For Mr. Vengeance, 2002
2- Oldboy, 2003
3- Sympathy For Lady Vengeance, 2005


From all of them, Oldboy is my favourite one. It is a dramatic thriller which talks about how Oh Dae-su, a Korean business man, is kidnapped and kept locked over 15 years until one day is setted free. Oh Dae-su starts a timeless searching of his nemesis.

The North American remake is ready, directed by Spike Lee, to get to the big screen in 2014.

These are some Oldboy quotes I really like:

-Revenge is good for your health, but pain will fing you again.
-Be it a stone or a grain of sand, in water they both sink.
-Laugh and the world laugh with you. Weep and you weep alone.

The story comes from the Japanese Manga with the same name, written by Garon Tsuchiya and illustrated by Nobuaki Minegishi, which its last version has been published in 5 books, taking advantage of the next North American release.

From my point of view, I don´t think there´s need to film a remake, the film is perfect, and I believe will be very difficult to equalize (worst in trying to improve it). If what is want it´s to get Oh Dae-su story to more audience, I think the fame caused by the last Park film -Stoker, 2013-(with Hollywood actors) is achieveing this objective.

I went to the cinema to watch Stoker and I fell in love with India Stoker story, a teenager who after losing her father, starts living with anxiety the new home arrival, her uncle Charlie, who was unknown for her until then. It is a psychological thriller that mixes the sexual awake of teenagers with emotionless crimes, perfect shots with dark and ligh contrast and the excellent O.S.T. In my opinion, essential to see. (Trailer on the bottom).

Later on, once the last film is released, I will talk about the Revenge Trilogy about USA history , of Quentin Tarantino:

한국 영화

                    Hoy  le toca el turno a un gran director de cine surcoreano, Chan-Wook Park , que estudió filosofía en la universidad y (dicen) que  tras ver la película de Vértigo (1958) de Hitchcok se interesó por el cine.

 Fue catapultado a la fama tras dirigir una de las películas más taquilleras de la historia de Corea  en 2001 - Área común de seguridad (Gongdong gyeongbi gu-yeok. JSA. 2000). Esta película trata sobre la investigación que se realiza al aparecer dos soldados norcoreanos muertos en el área de seguridad compartida, que se encuentra entre ambas Coreas (del Norte y del Sur) y, como es de esperar, ambas Coreas se culpan entre sí.  

Como curiosidad, en la cumbre de 2007 entre ambos países, el presidente de Corea del Sur, Roh Moo-Hyun, le obsequió con el DVD de esta película, al presidente de Corea del Norte, Kim Jong-il. 

Tras el éxito de esta película, Park inició la trilogía de la venganza:

1-Sympathy For Mr. Vengeance, 2002

2-Oldboy, 2003

3-Sympathy For Lady Vengeance, 2005

De todas ellas, Oldboy es mi favorita. Es un thriller dramático que cuenta como Oh Dae-su, hombre de negocios coreano, un día es secuestrado y mantenido encerrado durante 15 años hasta que un buen día es liberado. Oh Dae-su empieza una búsqueda a contrareloj de su némesis.

Ya está listo el remake norteamericano, dirigido por Spike Lee, que se estrenará en nuestro país a principios de 2014.

Algunas frases en la película Oldboy que me han gustado:

-La venganza es la mejor cura para alguien herido (Woo-jin Lee)

-Sea un grano de arena o una roca, en el agua se hunden de igual manera.

-Ríe, y el mundo reirá contigo...Llora, y llorarás solo. (Dae-su)

La historia proviene del manga japonés del mismo nombre, escrito por Garon Tsuchiya e ilustrado por Nobuaki Minegishi, cuya última edición se ha publicado en 5 volúmenes, aprovechando el estreno de la adaptación cinematográfica norteamericana.

Desde mi punto de vista, no creo que haga falta un remake, la película está perfecta como está y creo que sería muy difícil igualarla (ya no digo mejorarla). Si lo que se pretende es que la historia de Oh Dae-su llegue a más público, creo que de ello ya se está encargando la fama lograda por la última película de Park (con actores más hollywoodienses)- Stoker (2013), otra obra maestra.

Fui a ver Stoker al cine y quedé prendada de la historia de India Stoker, adolescente que tras la pérdida de su padre, vive con inquietud la llegada a su familia de su tío Charlie, del que desconocía su existencia hasta ese momento. Es un thriller psicológico que mezcla el despertar sexual de la adolescencia con fríos crímenes, fantásticos planos limpios que contrastan luz y oscuridad con la banda sonora perfecta. En mi opinión, imprescindible ver. (Os dejo el tráiler más abajo).

Más adelante, una vez se estrene la última película, hablaré sobre la trilogía (también de) venganza sobre la historia de EEUU, de Quentin Tarantino:

LA PLUME DE MA TANTE (ENGLISH VERSION)

                            I´m gonna start the blog with the last book I´ve read: The Exorcist, horror novel (the first one, cause until then the author had only written comedy novels) written by William Peter Blatty, in 1971. It is the story of the devil possession of a girl (Regan McNeil) which is based in a real exorcism incident suffered by a thirteen year old boy in 1949, in USA.

-The book was brought to the big screen by William Friedkin (the director) in 1973. It was the first horror film I saw when I was a child.

If you read the book, you will be able to discover that until getting to the devil possession diagnosis of Regan  and that an exorcism has to be practised, most of the doctors defined Regan illness as: hysteria.

-In the left picture there´s the famous french neurologist, Jean-Martin Charcot teaching hysteria in a class.

-I recommend you to watch the film: Hysteria (2011, directed by Tanya Wexler) to get an idea of how the girl with this illness was treated. 

The word Hysteria (etymologically) → is an uterus illness (only women can have) that causes psychological behaviour disorder.

As a matter of interest, throughout XIX century, doctors treated hysteria patients with clitoris massages, until they brought them to sexual climax, that was the moment when the pain disappeared. Doctors thought hysteria was caused by sexual frustration.

During 1890 there was an hysteria epidemic, doctors thought they had found a good remedy to relieve this illness, the use of vibrators and dildos, that´s when these sexual instruments appeared for the first time.

Nowadays the hysteria term does not exist (in medical terms).      

-Another thing I didn´t know is that the film scene (and used as the cover in film and book) is inspired  in a painting of René Magritte, named Empire of light.

-The management team liked the strong contrast of the street lamp lighting up the main entrance and the darkness where the house is. They used it to create a mystery and strength air the moment Merrin Father gets Regan home.
